Aurora propagation on 50MHz/6m in North America (November 12, 2025)

On November 12, 2025 0009UTC, Kakioka Magnetic Observatory in Japan detected a massive scale of geomagnetic disturbance. This caused a large-scale aurora borealis or northern lights in North America.

Auroral backscatter propagation is a popular path for 50MHz/6m band communication of the amateur radio. I recorded the Morse Code contacts during 0320-0326UTC, November 12, 2025 (MP3 file link) of my radio station N6BDX operated from Remote Ham Radio W2/Summit station site in Schoharie County, New York, USA. Note well that the received Morse Code signals were heavily modulated by noise presumably due to rapid random move of aurora, while they were presumably transmitted as pure tones.
